Big Data to improve tourism management in Gipuzkoa under the Begika model
As part of the digitalisation of Gipuzkoa's tourism, and in line with the Strategic Plan to boost the sector in 2020–2023 and also the BEGIKA model, the government of Gipuzkoa has launched several different kinds of initiatives to make progress in data collection for measuring and monitoring tourism and advance towards the creation of a Tourist Intelligence System (SIT), a repository of data about the sector and tourist activity in Gipuzkoa.
These initiatives include:
- The development of Hodeian, a tool to centralise tourist information generated in the destination through the integration of data obtained from various sources, so as to carry out in-depth analysis to get to know the current situation in the city in three dimensions:
- Monitoring the origin and volume of tourist expenditure by visitors in the destination's commercial establishments through information provided by banks.
- Analysing the flow of visitors and routes taken in the destination through data provided by telecommunications companies and mobile phone operators.
- Counting and monitoring tourists through sources like Wi-Fi networks and sensors installed in various points of interest in the region.
- The launch of new communication tools and the improvement of those already in existence: Arantxat, a virtual tourist guide developed under a chatbot system available on WhatsApp, which includes all the information flows gathered from the most frequently asked questions in tourist offices, the Gipuzkoa Passport mobile app and the Gipuzkoa Turismo website.
- The launch of a support hub for the tourism sector.
