The Network

The Network

The Smart Tourism Destinations Network is a tool to implement the Smart Tourism Destinations model and an initiative of the Secretary of State for Tourism to foster the exchange of experiences and knowledge that ultimately contributes to the smart development of tourist destinations.

Transformation towards a smart management model

This experience has been one of the main commitments of the Secretary of State for Tourism in the recent years, thanks to which Spain is now cementing its status as a leader in the implementation of a methodology for the transformation of destinations towards a new tourism management model rooted in governance, sustainability, accessibility, innovation and technology.

The Smart Tourism Destinations Network is a meeting point and support tool for destinations in their transformation process towards a smart, digital management model and more sustainable tourism development. It is a key action in generating added value for destinations and for monitoring projects following a diagnosis, to promote cohesion, the exchange of good practices and the unlocking of synergies between destinations.

Spain is a leader in the design and implementation of public policies to benefit tourism

The creation of the Smart Tourism Destinations Network in February 2019 provided a strategic boost that is now serving as a catalyst to consolidate the Smart Tourist Destinations Programme and as a key instrument to ensure Spain‘s leadership in the design and implementation of public tourism policies at local level.

The Secretary of State for Tourism is leading the coordination and management of this initiative, which pursues the following objectives:

  • Encouraging Spanish tourist destinations to become smart destinations and join the Network.
  • Fostering public-private partnerships in the development of products, services and actions in smart destinations.
  • Contributing to ensure Spain’s leadership in smart tourism through the actions of the Network.
  • Guaranteeing the quality and evolution of the Smart Tourism Destinations project.

Smart Tourism Destination

Admission to the Smart Tourism Destinations Network does not automatically convey Smart Tourism Destination distinction; rather, it is a commitment by the member destination to initiate the process of becoming a Smart Tourism Destination under the Smart Tourism Destination methodology defined by the Spanish Secretary of State for Tourism. Click on the following link to learn more about the destinations that have started the diagnosys process.

Only those destinations that obtain a score of 80% or more in meeting the requirements set out in the Smart Tourism Destination methodology are worthy of the Smart Tourism Destination distinction. Destinations that fall short of 80% achieve Associated Smart Tourism Destination recognition, which entitles them as destinations committed to the process of continuous improvement. More than 350 destinations have already formalised their membership of the Smart Tourism Destinations Network. Starting the process of joining the Smart Tourism Destinations Network is easy. If you have any questions, please contact the Smart Tourism Destinations Network Secretariat.
