Carmacal, B2B tool to measure the carbon footprint so that tour operators can create eco-friendly travel packages
Carmacal is a cutting-edge B2B tool within the CARMATOP project, which has been developed fundamentally so that tourism operators can easily and intuitively measure the carbon footprint of their tourism packages, completely and in detail.
Unlike other calculators, which only measure general emission factors and focus largely on air transport and accommodation, Carmacal enables the impact of CO2 to be calculated holistically as it includes transport, accommodation and the activities the tourist will do in the destination. To make use of this tool, travel companies must acquire annual user licences and can access it online.
It allows tourism operators to create travel packages based on sustainability criteria in addition to the normal price, quality and convenience variables:
- Transport: the mode of transport can be selected from a total of 25 options with their characteristics so more accurate predictions can be made.
- Accommodation: a database of several hotel chains is provided, which estimate their individual, customised impact. If not already included, it offers the possibility to categorise accommodation and calculate an average value based on its characteristics.
- Activities: it identifies the activities which have the highest impact in terms of the generation of carbon dioxide emissions.
The initiative was developed by the ANVR, an association of Dutch travel companies which requires all its members to comply with some basic sustainable practice standards. The tool has received several global awards, winning the following: - 2015 Green Feather for the best sustainable Dutch tourism initiative
- 2016 Tourism for Tomorrow, awarded by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC)
- 2017 World Travel Organization Prize for Innovation in Research and Technology
