Digital twin of the Wall of Ávila to improve its management and preservation
With the aim of improving the state of conservation and optimising the management of the cultural heritage of the city of Ávila, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985, a digital transformation project was carried out on the Ávila City Walls based on a 3D recreation.
This initiative, carried out by the Department of Cartographic Engineering at the Ávila Polytechnic School in collaboration with Ávila City Council, is based on the development of a Digital Twin of the City Walls, i.e., the generation of a 3D Spatial Information System of this resource in order to improve knowledge-sharing and manage it in a more efficient, sustainable way.
The content of this virtual platform is based on scanning the perimeter of the outer ramparts of the Avila Walls, spanning over 2,526 m, which was carried out by 83 laser stations that analysed 240 million points.
This action has meant that the destination now has a technological tool which, in addition to optimising the management and preservation of this resource, can also be used as a means of promoting the Avila Walls for tourism and making the destination more attractive.
