Tourism intelligence tools and reservation system to anticipate and manage beach capacity

Within the new situation caused by COVID-19, one of the measures to lower contact between beachgoers was sectioning off the beaches, creating spaces in the sand to then be able to establish a maximum number of people per area. Benidorm implemented the measure on the Levante and Poniente beaches, dividing them into 20 free-access sections, with 1554 areas in Levante and 5661 in Poniente. Each area was a total of 16 m2 (4 m x 4 m) and could accommodate a maximum of four people. They also provided 39 access points to the beaches.

Once the beaches had been divided up and the relevant security measures implemented, the destination launched a reservation management platform to avoid overcrowding and distribute the flow of visitors over the course of a full day. Reservations were made 24 hours in advance and tourists had to take the following steps:

  • Choose a date and available time slot on their preferred beach.
  • Select a section and area among those available.
  • Fill in the details of the person booking and others attending.
  • Download their ticket after receiving an email with a link.
  • Go to the access point to have their ticket validated.
  • Go to their area on the beach The measure included the possibility to make reservations at three physical locations in the town, which could also provide information and answer questions about how the reservation platform worked.
