iGirouette, intelligent real-time signage that informs, guides and orients the tourist through the destination
Girouette, an initiative that is part of the Lyon Confluence Smart City project, is a system of dynamic connected digital signs to guide visitors, optimising their holidays in the destination. The signs consist of two LED screens shaped like arrows, which are able to rotate 360º, show directions on both sides and offer lots of viewing options, like different text, images and logos, among others. Once the user accesses the app via the sign's QR code, it verifies their location and based on the selected points of interest, it shows them:
- The direction to take.
- The distance to the selected point of interest.
- The estimated time it will take to get there on the type of transportation selected (on foot, by bike, public transport, etc).
While the visitor is travelling through the city, the signs identify them and update the screens with the corresponding information. To give the correct directions, the app updates its content through Open Data, using real-time information from various data sources that also provide the software used by the public managers in the destination to manage the information on the signs. This initiative was nominated at the 2017 INPI Awards, which reward innovative companies and research centres that stand out for their industrial property strategies.
