My Water Footprint: measuring water usage in Cape Town

My Water Footprint is an initiative introduced with the aim of boosting smart, responsible tourism in Cape Town and the Western Cape province in the face of the destination's water shortage problem.
The tool calculates each tourist's water footprint during their stay based on a short questionnaire featuring different blocks of questions.

Basic questions to measure the stay and potential water consumption cover:

  • Reason for travel (business or holiday)
  • Number of people travelling
  • Time staying in the destination

Questions with a counter to estimate real consumption based on a series of activities cover:

  • Daily use of water for personal hygiene
  • Water consumption related to food habits
  • Water used for cleaning

The counter uses the tourist's responses to calculate their real or predicted water consumption in litres. Based on this, the tool creates flow credits (10 litres of water = 1 flow credit = 1 ZAR = approx. €0.059), a coin created for water consumption.
Through the flow credits created by the calculator, tourists can offset their footprint through local water-saving projects or by making donations of an equal or higher value than their consumption.

This initiative, fully scalable to any kind of destination, was developed in 2018 by Wesgro, the official agency for the promotion of tourism, business and investments for Cape Town, and FLOW (For Love Of Water).
