Alcalá de Henares, a city declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, approved its Tourism Sustainability Plan for Destinations (Plan de Sostenibilidad Turística en Destino, PSTD) in 2021.

This plan aims to develop a Smart Tourism project to improve the destination’s competitiveness and to address the effects of COVID-19 on tourism.

This project consists of the following actions:

• Digital Transformation Office. Support for tourism companies with their digital transformation and improvement of competitiveness process
• Working sessions with local businesses and associations
• Digital communication to improve the destination's positioning
• Active listening on social media
• Smart Data. Collection and processing of destination data sources.
• Smart signage. Directional and interpretive signage complemented with Beacon devices to facilitate access to information
• Wi-Fi in the Old Town
• Smart City platform. Integrated management of destination information sources
• Smart furniture. Sustainable and smart furniture to improve the quality of the urban environment
• Virtual Assistant for visitors.
