Castro Urdiales, located in the eastern part of the autonomous community of Cantabria, is a significant tourist destination both regionally and nationally. Its privileged coastal location, next to the Cantabrian Sea, and its proximity to major urban centers such as Bilbao and Santander, make it a strategic enclave for the development of cultural, heritage, and nature tourism.
From a heritage perspective, the municipality boasts an important historical and artistic complex, the main exponent of which is the Gothic church of Santa María de la Asunción, accompanied by the castle-lighthouse, the medieval bridge, and other buildings that reflect its maritime and defensive past. This monumental complex, along with the traditional layout of the old town, constitutes a key attraction for visitors.
In terms of sun and beach tourism, Castro Urdiales has several quality urban beaches, such as Brazomar and Ostende, which offer adequate services for recreational and sports use. The municipality also offers a varied culinary offering, centered on seafood, and an active cultural program throughout the year, with events of special interest such as Holy Week and the Coso Blanco.
Admission to the Smart Tourism Destinations Programme | Castro-Urdiales joined the DTI Network in 2019 and has obtained the Diagnostic Report and Action Plan for transformation into a Smart Tourism Destination by August 2025. |
