Covering an area of approximately 8,970 hectares, the city of Granada is nestled within a natural area that overlaps with part of the Vega region and the surrounding terrain, located at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada in eastern Andalusia.
Its privileged geographic position has enabled it to foster significant economic and tourism development, due to its importance as a communications hub between Andalusia, the eastern region, and the rest of Spain.
In recent years, Granada has established itself as a leading urban tourist destination, contributing to the city’s position as one of its most important economic sectors.
Admission to the Smart Tourism Destinations Programme |
Granada joined the Smart Tourism Destinations project in 2020. In 2021, it conducted its first diagnostic process, culminating in the development of the Diagnostic Report and Action Plan for its transformation into a Smart Tourism Destination. The diagnostic assessment for the renewal of its status as a Participating Smart Tourism Destination was completed in 2025. |
