Tardajos is a Castile and León locality in the province of Burgos, covering 12.8 km², with a small population of around 800 inhabitants. It is located very close to the city of Burgos, 12 km away, in the very heart of the province, with excellent road connections that place it in a strategic position.
Its economy is based on agriculture and tourism, together with the rest of the service and commercial sectors.
The origins of Tardajos date back to the Celtic period, around the 8th century BC, as evidenced by the remains found at “El Castro”. The Turmogos, an Indo-European Celtic people, founded the city of Deobrígula or “City of the Gods”. Later, in the 1st century BC, it was Romanised, expanding along the river plain at the confluence of the rivers Urbel and Arlanzón, where remains of great archaeological importance have been found.
The urban layout of Tardajos is of medieval origin and is still preserved. Tardajos has two Assets of Cultural Interest (BIC): one is the Way of St James, in the category of Historic Ensemble, which crosses the town from east to west, and the second is the archaeological site of Deobrígula, dating from the time of the Roman Empire.
| Admission to the Smart Tourism Destinations Programme | Tardajos joined the Smart Tourist Destinations project in 2022, and in 2023 the first assessment was carried out with the delivery of the Diagnostic Report and Action Plan for its transformation into a Smart Tourist Destination. In 2025, the diagnostic process for the renewal of its status as an Affiliated Smart Tourist Destination was completed. |
