Positium, solution for the analysis of the real impact of large international events on tourist activity in the destination
Positium is a solution that analyses positioning data from mobile devices to thus analyse the flow of visitors before, during and after an event and its impact on tourist activity. This system produces precise results for two main reasons. Firstly, almost everybody has a mobile device nowadays, which ensures access to a large percentage of the population. Secondly, mobile positioning data provide precise locations and times, with a very low error coefficient in comparison to traditional analysis processes.
To perform more detailed analysis and further understand the existing relationship between an event and tourist activity, the same process was followed during two large-scale events: the 2018 Asian Games, held in the Indonesian destinations of Jakarta, Bandung and Palembang, and the 2018 World Bank Annual Meetings, held in Bali. The process followed was the use of Data Analytics to standardise and classify the information collected about the numbers of both local and foreign tourists, where they came from, the destinations they visited and the duration of their stays. This solution has been extremely valuable in comparing and learning what kinds of events generate higher tourist activity. One of the most important results that came to light was that there was a significant different between the expected number of visitors, based on ticket sales, and the real number that attended.
