Estella-Lizarra is a historic city in Navarre, situated on the banks of the Ega River and surrounded by a landscape of hills and vineyards. Founded in the 11th century as a strategic enclave on the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James), it combines a valuable medieval heritage with a vibrant cultural scene. Its old town preserves palaces, noble houses, and Romanesque and Gothic buildings, such as the Church of San Pedro de la Rúa, the Palace of the Kings of Navarre, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
The destination is known for its rich Jacobean tradition, its gastronomy based on local products, and its proximity to natural areas such as the Urbasa mountain range and the Urederra River spring. Estella-Lizarra offers a balanced blend of history, nature, and local life, making it an ideal place for those seeking cultural tourism, hiking, and an authentic Navarrese experience.
| Joining the Smart Destinations project | Estella-Lizarra joined the Smart Tourist Destinations project by preparing the Diagnostic Report and Action Plan for the transformation into a Smart Tourist Destination, carried out in December 2025. |
| Outstanding initiatives
|
The tourism department of the Estella-Lizarra City Council is committed to the digitalization of the destination.
To this end, it is developing various projects related to this initiative: virtual recreations of its castles and the old synagogue, implementation of smart and accessible tourist signage, gamification of resources, and more. Furthermore, this year has already seen the completion of projects related to energy efficiency: replacing monumental lighting with LEDs, improving the efficiency of the municipal hostel, and creating gardens with native species. |
