Fuengirola is a coastal city of 85,581 inhabitants located on the Costa del Sol and one of Europe’s most important tourist destinations. Its name is associated in the collective imagination with long, fine sandy beaches, high-rise apartment blocks, warm summers, and mild winters. It boasts 8 km of beaches integrated into the city center, which hold the Q for Quality and Blue Flag distinctions, and its exceptional seafront promenade opens onto the sea like a vast balcony.
Furthermore, it has a rich historical heritage left by the various peoples who settled here, such as the Phoenicians, Romans, and Arabs. Some notable examples include the Arab castle of Sohail, the Roman site of Finca del Secretario with its Interpretation Center, and the Roman Baths.
Its streets are bustling with commercial activity, and the city boasts three municipal markets, a large shopping center, and two traditional weekly markets, as well as an antiques market on Saturdays.
Young people, children, and adults alike are guaranteed plenty of entertainment in Fuengirola: the BIOPARC animal park, playgrounds, romantic horse-drawn carriage or boat rides, cinemas, lively nightlife, and concerts at Marenostrum, one of the most spectacular open-air music venues and one of the most exclusive stages in Spain.
| Joining the Smart Destinations project | Fuengirola joined the Smart Tourist Destinations project in 2020, and in 2022 the Diagnostic Report and Action Plan for its transformation into a Smart Tourist Destination were completed. Its commitment was renewed in March 2026. |
