The Monfragüe Biosphere Reserve features some of the best-preserved mountain and forest ecosystems to be found within the Mediterranean, which has earned the territory considerable protection for its natural heritage: its plant and animal life, water courses and geological resources.
The area covers a large part of 14 municipalities, spanning a total area of 116,160 hectares. It is located in the centre-north of the province of Cáceres, lying between the towns of Plasencia and Trujillo and the city of Cáceres.
Since its declaration as a protected area, Monfragüe has cemented its status as a genuine sanctuary for birdwatching.
Admission to the Smart Tourism Destinations Programme | Monfragüe joined the Smart Tourism Destinations Network by drawing up the Diagnostic Report and Action Plan needed to turn it into a Smart Destination, which it carried out in November 2018. |
