A Noble Medieval Town of Biscay located on the left bank of the Nervión Estuary, founded in 1322 by Doña María Díaz de Haro, and home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Bizkaia Bridge and the Northern Way of the Camino de Santiago.
On July 13, 2006, the Bizkaia Bridge was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This structure, inaugurated on July 28, 1893, perfectly combines architectural design and functionality. Its gondola, a mobile platform suspended over the Nervión estuary, allows the transport of people and vehicles between the two banks. It is also possible to cross the Bizkaia Bridge via a pedestrian walkway, about 60 meters high, offering magnificent panoramic views.
Portugalete is part of the Camino de Santiago, on its Northern Way, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on July 5, 2015.
The route passes through the Historic Quarter and the main artery of modern Portugalete. The Noble Town has a Municipal Hostel for pilgrims.
| Admission into the Smart Tourism Destinations Project | The destination joined the project in the 2023/2024 edition, with the development of the Diagnostic Report and Action Plan in December 2024 for its transformation into a Smart Tourism Destination. |
