The Tagus International Transboundary Biosphere Reserve is two destinations in one, a place where Spain and Portugal come together to offer a peaceful refuge where you can enjoy nature in an area that is extremely well preserved, with valuable species of flora and fauna such as the Iberian imperial eagle, black vulture, black stork and Lusitanian iris, among many others.
The passage of different peoples and civilisations has left its mark on this part of the south-west of the peninsula, which today boasts one of the largest and best-preserved groups of dolmens in Europe, cave paintings that form part of the Prehistoric Rock Art Cultural Route, the majestic Roman bridge of Alcántara and the heritage left by the Order of Alcántara throughout the territory.
Culture here is expressed through the fusion of Spanish and Portuguese influences, giving rise to a unique language, cuisine, folklore and festivals.
The commitment to sustainable development is also evident in the initiatives that have been promoted for years by the Network of Educational Centres of the Tagus International Biosphere Reserve, making this place a living space with a shared future.
All these values were recognised by UNESCO in 2016.
| Admission to the Smart Tourism Destinations Programme | The Tajo Internacional Biosphere Reserve has obtained the Diagnostic Report and Action Plan for its transformation into a Smart Tourist Destination in January 2026. |
