The International Tagus Transboundary Biosphere Reserve is two destinations in one—a place where Spain and Portugal join hands to offer a haven where visitors can peacefully enjoy nature preserved in an excellent state of conservation, home to valuable species of flora and fauna such as the Iberian imperial eagle, the black vulture, the black stork, and the Lusitanian iris, among many others.
The passage of different peoples and civilizations has left its mark on this part of the southwestern Iberian Peninsula, resulting today in one of the largest and best-preserved dolmen complexes in Europe, rock art that forms part of the Prehistoric Rock Art Trails Cultural Itinerary, the majestic Roman bridge of Alcántara, and the heritage left by the Order of Alcántara throughout the territory.
Culture is expressed here through the fusion of Hispanic and Lusitanian traditions, giving rise to a unique language, gastronomy, folklore, and festivals.
The commitment to sustainable development is also reflected in the initiatives promoted for years by the Network of Educational Centers of the Tagus International Biosphere Reserve, making this place a living space of shared future.
All these values were recognized by UNESCO in 2016.
| Incorporation into the Smart Tourism Destinations Project | The Tagus International Biosphere Reserve obtained the Diagnostic Report and Action Plan for its transformation into a Smart Tourist Destination in January 2026. |
