Tequila, in the State of Jalisco, is much more than a drink, for we are talking about one of the 111 Magical Towns where tradition and modernity co-exist.
A place right in the heart of Mexico, though one that beats its own drum thanks to the local tourism sector’s drive to make this destination known to the world.
Thanks to these efforts, Tequila is now a must-see for lovers of tequila-making, offering also exquisite Mexican gastronomy and the natural and cultural splendour of the local area, most notably its unrivalled natural agave landscape, which has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tequila joined the Smart Destinations project by drawing up the Diagnostic Report and Action Plan needed to turn it into a Smart Destination, which it carried out between August and November of 2016. |

- The destination operates a robust and inclusive public-private management structure, embodied in the Council for the Integral Development of Tequila (CODIT), which allows for the coordination and continuity of the destination’s development plans.
- Private investment has shown a strong commitment and key involvement in tourism-related projects relating to Tequila.
- One of the fields where most progress has been made relates to the incorporation of innovative data management systems and the development of a Smart Destination Master Plan.
- Moreover, the private sector is helping to diversify demand and supply through the development and structuring of an innovative, differentiated and quality product.
- Public and private initiatives are looking to create new businesses and strengthen Tequila’s existing business fabric by promoting local entrepreneurship.
- Tequila bases its appeal on its main tourism assets, which are developed through policies to conserve and improve the town’s cultural and natural heritage.
