Plasencia is a medium-sized city of around 40,000 inhabitants, located in the northern part of the province of Cáceres and in the northern third of the autonomous community of Extremadura.
It is approximately 85 km from Cáceres, 120 km north of Salamanca and around 250 km from Madrid. The border with Portugal is only 90 km away.
Its economy is based on the services sector, especially hospitality and commerce, as well as other services shared with nearby towns, such as healthcare, banking, education and administrative services. Indeed, Plasencia is the nerve centre and administrative hub for areas such as Monfragüe, La Vera, the Jerte Valley, the Ambroz Valley, Granadilla, Gata and Las Hurdes. From a tourism perspective, these areas provide the city with significant natural appeal.
In terms of tourism and monuments, the city has a well-preserved ensemble of palaces, churches, stately homes and other heritage buildings. It also boasts two cathedrals, an aqueduct, medieval walls and other historic landmarks.
